Mikigak Kingwatsiak

According to James Houston, Mikigak Kingwatsiak had strange dreams and religious experiences as a young man. The subjects of Mikigak’s infrequent, but bold, drawings are often from this world of dreams and spirits. Imaginary creatures may appear in human clothing or in a state of transformation. Mikigak also carved a lot; again, he mostly depicts imaginary creatures. Mikigak is the natural son of Pitseolak Ashoona (1904-1983) and the adopted son of Kingwatsiak. Excerpted, with light edits, from Strange Scenes: Early Cape Dorset Drawings by Jean Blodgett and Susan Gustavison, published by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, January 1993.
