Kiawak Ashoona
Son of Pitseolak Ashoona and tribe leader Ashoona, Kiawak Ashoona was born at Tariugajak in 1933. He began carving and drawing during the late 1940s in Cape Dorset. His artwork is highly detailed and explores the relationships between people, non-human beings, and their landscapes. Many of Kiawak's family were also artists, including his mother, Pitseolak, his brothers Kaka, Koomwartok, and Ottochie, as well as his sister, Napatchie Pootoogook. Kiawak was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2000 and was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy in 2003. His artwork has been included in over 75 exhibitions internationally.
